3H Project: Objective 1 - Inoculate

Inoculate all the children one year of age and younger in Vladivostok with hepatitis B (also see GAVI) and MMR (Mumps, Measles, Rubella) vaccines.

Who is responsible?

The Vlad-Eco Rotary Club has overall management responsibility for the inside component. Eugenia Terekhova is the lead Rotarian for the project in that club. They will be working with the Primorski Krai Health Department Director who will arrange in country transportation, storage and distribution of the vaccines. Vladivostok Rotary Club will assist the Vlad-Eco Club. The Vladivostok Rotary Clubs have several doctors as members who will be taking an active role in the administrating the inoculations. The Cameron Park Rotary Club is responsible for purchasing vaccines and shipping them to Vladivostok. Bob Dorr is the lead Cameron Park Rotarian for the project. Bob Dorr is the coordinator for the whole project.

How and when will it be done?

As soon as the Cameron Park Rotary Club is notified that the 3-H Grant is approved (anticipated in November 2000), the Club will initiate purchase of the vaccines and arrange shipping. The vaccines will be purchased through UNICEF. We expect to begin inoculations in January 2001. There should be three shipments each year probably at 4-month intervals. However, the second hepatitis B inoculation is recommended one month after the first one. The interval for shipping may need to be adjusted to meet this requirement. Dr. Prikhodko (Krai Health Director) has given instructions on how to correctly document each shipment so it will be accepted in Russia as "Humanitarian aid". This will eliminate the normal customs charge. Once the vaccines arrive, Dr. Prikhodko will arrange for transport, storage, and administering of the vaccines. Vlad-Eco and Vladivostok Rotarians will monitor and assist during this part of the project.

The management of the 3-H grant funds is the responsibility of the Cameron Park Rotary Club. The activities for the second and third year will be similar to the first year. The project should be completed in January 2004.
