| Sizing
your pictures means reducing their physical size as much as possible
while still achieving the effect you want to have on your web page.
When you reduce the size of the picture, you dramatically reduce the
size of the picture file that will result. Our sample picture is
shown below in 3 sizes. |
This image
is 590 pixels wide X 443 pixels high and is 23,052 bytes in size.
Pictures of this size don't leave a lot of other room for stuff on
your web page. Note: We have done some other
things that we will share with you later to reduce the byte count
from 250,000 bytes to 23,052 just so this web page will load fast.
What is important to note is the amount of reduction in byte size
that occurs as we make the pictures smaller. Look at the
other two sizes below this picture.

This
image is 400 pixels wide X 300 pixels high and is 11,954 bytes in
size. Now you can see that we have some room for some other stuff on
our web page, like this very text describing this picture. Images
that are 300 to 400 pixels wide are an excellent size to use to show
good detail. |
This
image is 200 pixels wide X 150 pixels high and is only 3,663 bytes
in size. Images of this size are very useful to make a point about
something where you do not really need to show a lot of detail. This
is also a good size to use when creating thumbnails (small pictures
that one click on to see a larger version of the same picture. |
| Note:
If you are going to send your pictures to grandma so that she might
print them on her color printer, you may not want to downsize them
too much or she will end up with tiny tiny prints. |
Now that
you have sized your picture, let's move next to adjusting
the brightness, contrast, and color saturation of the photograph to
make it more pleasing to look at on the web.. |
