| Topic: Adjusting
the brightness, contrast, and saturation of pictures for the web |
  |
      |
 |
Here is an example of
our original picture. It is too dark. |
 |
We use the brightness
features of our picture editing software to make the picture
brighter. Our experiences is that you should make them slighter
brighter than you think they ought to be if you are going to display
them on web pages. Most browsers seem to render images slightly
darker than you expected. |
 |
Sometimes images are
flat, or lack the color we expect. You need to use the saturation
features of your picture editing software to increase
the color saturation. Try to get a realistic rendering as shown in
the second picture above. |
 |
Sometimes images are
over saturated, or have too much color. You need to use the saturation
features of your picture editing software to decrease
the color saturation. As before, try to get a realistic rendering as
shown in the second picture above. |
 |
Finally, there are
often times special effects you can add to your pictures. Here we
have used some photo framing tools to blend the edges of the
pictures to white. This gives a softer feel for this picture. |
| Your photo editing
software has many more photo enhancing functions than we have
mentioned here. We suggest you play with them all with just one
photograph so that you can learn how those functions affect the look
of your pictures. |
Now that you have
adjusted the brightness and color saturation of your
picture, let's move next to final step in creating pictures that you
want to use on your web site or email to friends. This step has to
do with how you save your pictures. Pay real close attention
to the two pictures that are about to be displayed and note how much
faster one displays than the other. |
