Observatory - Daytime Viewing Tips
Current Status: The observatory is now open to the public. Press Here for further details.

Viewing SunThe Observatory will be open occasionally for daytime viewing, primarily of the Sun. Sun spots and solar flares are almost always visible. There are no special preparations you need to do for daytime viewing at our Observatory. EXCEPT, parents and children need to observe extreme caution and pay special attention to the items below.

Notice the red circle in the photo to the left? This circle shows a very special filter that has been placed over the telescope. This very dark special filter keeps the sun from damaging your eyes. Please read the warnings below. Parents, please teach your children the very important warnings below before they come to the Observatory.

Warning about viewing the Sun
WARNING: Never look directly at the Sun. Do not look at the Sun with your naked eye. Never look at the Sun through binoculars or a telescope or with any other type of magnification. Doing so will instantly cause severe eye damage or blindness. Even if the Sun seems dimmed by clouds, fog, or is near Sunrise or Sunset, looking directly at it will cause severe eye damage or blindness. Do not attempt to look at the Sun through dark glasses or other dark glass. Doing so will instantly cause severe eye damage or blindness.
Note: All of the information on this web page is tentative and represents what we think will be the plan on this subject once the Observatory opens in the summer of 2006.
