Our speaker, lead solar docent Bill Hagbery, is one of the incredibly talented and dedicated volunteer docents helping guests enjoy a quality educational experience at the Rotary Club of Cameron Park Community Observatory. Before retiring as an electrical engineer, he oversaw a dozen federal hydroelectric powerplants in the Central Valley Project, the largest water project on Earth.
Our lunch meeting will be extra special as Bill will provide a brief presentation about the sun and solar system, as well as the solar program at the Observatory which has reportedly shown the Sun to more people than any other observatory in the US. Bill and several docents will bring their solar telescopes so we can go outside and safely view the Sun. At this time, the Sun is very active; there should be many visible sunspots and solar prominences.

Special Agents Justin Lee and Eric Berumen are assigned to the cyber squad at the FBI Sacramento Field Office. Their well-attended and excellent PowerPoint presentation, “Be Cyber Smart,” highlighted various frauds used by hackers and other criminals targeting individuals and businesses. It is their hope that public education will help prevent individuals and businesses from becoming future targets and victims. The FBI encourages all victims to report cyber crime, no matter the loss amount, because incidents might be linked to other investigations that the FBI is investigating (@www.ic3.gov).
Spoofing (communication disguised as being from a known, trusted source; often trying to mimic domain or account name), Phishing (designed to trick you into giving information by using fake Log-in pages, which can be directed via email, text message or phone), Business Email Compromise, Ransomware, Romance Scams and Crypto Investment Scams were discussed, as well tips for protecting yourself:
Be suspicious: companies usually do not contact you to ask for your password.
Don’t click on anything in an unsolicited email.
Look up the company’s phone number on your own.
Carefullyexamine the email address, URL and spelling.

To commemorate Rotary International’s (RI's) 100-year anniversary in 2005, RI encouraged clubs to create a lasting Centennial project in their community. Cameron Park Rotarian Bob Blum, owner of Ace Hardware, chaired the Centennial project committee. He and his Rotarian wife, Cathy Blum, were the club’s inspiration and guiding force for creating the Rotary Club of Cameron Park Community Observatory as the club’s centennial project that would be free for the public to enjoy.
Rotarian Bob Edwards, a retired educator and real estate broker, found the perfect site for the observatory adjacent to the EDCOE (El Dorado County Office of Education) campus and Folsom Lake College-El Dorado Center. He sought and negotiated a deal with several landowners of a parcel known at that time as Veerkamp Park to donate to EDCOE for the expressed purpose of building a park or a similar-type venue benefiting the community. Bob then negotiated a memorandum of understanding for EDCOE so that the Rotary Club of Cameron Park Community Observatory and Sherwood Demonstration Garden could be constructed on the site. Subsequently, he brokered a deal for EDCOE to purchase another parcel that became the site for the transportation facility, as well as a parking area for the observatory.
Rotarians raised approximately $88,000 in funds, and solicitated grants, donation of funds and materials to supplement the $155,000 needed to undertake this major project. Rotarian Doug Bisbee served as project manager. PDG Bob Dorr, also a member of the Board of Supervisors, functioned as the liaison with the County for obtaining building permits.
Murray & Downs Architects designed the observatory, which was patterned after the Kiwanis Chico Community Observatory in Bidwell Park, with a few enhancements. Doug Veerkamp Engineering did the grading for the foundation and constructed the asphalt driveway from the parking lot to the observatory. Stigall Homes built the observatory, which was painted by a Rotary work party. Bailey and Associate Structural Engineers constructed the retractable metal roofing.
Members Bill Ettlich and Doug Bisbee made the electrical and lighting designs for the facility and constructed the entire electrical system including the underground main electrical feeder from the college campus to the building. (Rotarian Gary Reynolds used his backhoe to trench the ditch for the underground main electrical feeder.)
Cathy Dugan: Don Fuller's debunking party will be at his house on July 29th, 5-7 PM, and a committee meeting will be held after today's meeting. Thanked long-distance member Bill Hughes of Washington for attending and reading today's Words of Wisdom. Dave Crofut has been approved for a 6-months leave of absence due to family health issues.
