This meeting will be at the Rotary Club of Cameron Park Community Observatory, 6699 Campus Drive, Placerville CA from 6:30 to 9:30 PM. Park in parking lot B closest to the Observatory.
We are thrilled to be hosting a joint meeting with the Rotary Club of Placerville. Join us for a fascinating night of stargazing while enjoying pizza with Rotarians from the West Slope. Our experienced talented docents will guide us in observing the wonders of the night sky, including Jupiter and Saturn. The weather forecast promises an ideal night for stargazing. Currently, we have received RSVPs from 84 attendees Stay tuned for a map and last-minute instructions, which will be emailed before the event.
Constructed in honor of Rotary International’s 100-year anniversary in 2005, the Community Observatory is the most extensive community service endeavor in our club’s history. It was made possible through the active involvement of our members, who collectively contributed nearly 10,000 hours to the planning and construction phases. Without the substantial commitment of our Rotarians, this ambitious project would have remained financially out of reach. Through our collective efforts we successfully raised $88,000 in funds. We skillfully sought out grants, and received generous donations of both funds and materials from the business community and volunteers to supplement the $155,000 needed to complete the project. Kathy Haven serves as the Community Impact Officer at the El Dorado Community Foundation (EDCF), where she has held multiple roles, including Grants and Scholarship Manager, Education Coordinator, and Impact Officer. The EDCF serves as an umbrella organization for over 300 funds, including nonprofits, all dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for residents and the general well-being of El Dorado County’s various communities.
Part of her work includes screening and managing the competitive grants awarded to non-profit organizations that directly serve El Dorado County residents. When grant funding becomes available, the Foundation distributes a Request for Proposal detailing the funding focus and application deadline. In recent years, the Foundation has expanded its efforts by offering educational and nonprofit betterment opportunities for both community members and fellow non-profits within the county that include:
The Scholarship Giving Circle, which re-directs annual dues of its members (minimum $40 with no upper limit) for scholarships to a local high school of the member’s choice. Each year, the members also vote on the number and size of scholarships given out to students from the school of choosing.
The new Non-Profit Speed Matching program connects community members interested in serving on nonprofit boards with nonprofits seeking qualified persons for leadership positions. So far, 36 nonprofits have obtained new board members - many within one month of meeting with community members in this program! The EDCF seeks board members for this matching event. The next one is October 5 in the M.O.R.E building in Placerville.
Membership Chair Anne Eckert had the honor of presenting Denise Leach with her well-earned blue badge, signifying her fulfillment of new member requirements. She was sponsored for membership by DeBorah Demander. Denise actively contributes to our club, even volunteering to set up for the Veteran's Stand-down event before today's lunch meeting. Denise has contributed "Words of Wisdom" at our meetings, provided food for the President's debunking party and is undergoing training to head our dictionary project for third graders. Congratulations Denise, and thank you for your commitment to our club!
Adam Marshall: On Sept. 29-30, we are supporting the Veterans Stand-down event at the Veteran's Memorial Hall in Placerville. He provided an update to changes made, and thanked Bill Ettlich and Denise Leach for their assistance in setting up this morning.
Marlyn Pino-Jones: Hands4Hope is holding a "Warm and Fuzzy Drive" from October 9-20 (i.e.warm clothes: jackets, sweatshirts, seaters, scarves, gloves and more). If you give to Marlyn, she will deposit them in their donation barrel close to her home.
