December 9 - Christmas Dinner and Auction
Please join us for our Annual Christmas Dinner and Auction this Thursday at the CP Country Club beginning with registration at 5:30 pm at the Club. We will have a lavish buffet, raffle prizes and a live auction. We will have the Ponderosa High School Choir in their first public performance since COVID! Chair Dave Sargent and his committee have created a beautiful event and we have 20 event sponsorships from club members. Mike Dugan will serve as the MC and auctioneer. (bring your credit cards and check book!).

The theme of the dinner and auction will be "Fellowship - Service- Renewal" to celebrate our return to a new normalcy!
Next Meeting: Dec-16-2021, Congressman Tom McClintock
Congressman Tom McClintock represents the people of California’s historic gold country and Sierra Nevada in a district that stretches from Lake Tahoe, through Yosemite Valley and on to Kings Canyon.  McClintock is a member of the House Judiciary Committee where he serves as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship and also serves on the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.  He is a senior member of the House Natural Resources Committee where he serves on the Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands, which he chaired from 2015 to 2018.  The Congressman is also a member of the House Budget Committee and has proposed major fiscal reforms to curb unauthorized appropriations, control mandatory spending, balance the budget and protect the nation’s credit.
Last Meeting,  Dec-02-2021- Haley Duclos, Nutritionist - Gut Health
Haley Duclos, BS, NDTR is a Dietetic Technician, Registered, and Nutrition Advisor for Raley’s O-N-E Market in El Dorado Hills spoke to us about "Gut Health."  She began her presentation with a quick course on the anatomy of the digestive system.  Then she explored the nutrients impacting digestion.  Some of the more important nutrients she discussed were soluble fiber, insoluble fiber, prebiotics and probiotics.

Haley gave a lesson in reading the fiber part of the Nutrition Facts panel on grocery products.  We are recommended to consume 25-35 grams of fiber per day.  She talked about the "Gut-brain connection" the Vagus  nerve.  It is pivotal as it relates to stress.  The trillions of microbes in your gut produce short fatty chain acids which connect with your immune system and inflammatory system.  Prebiotics are typically fibers that are fermented by your gut bacteria and feed those bacteria.  The probiotics are the live bacteria.  Those that affect the brain are referred to as  psychobiotics.  They improve symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression.  They are found in supplements, yogurts and fermented foods.  Haley then described what types of foods in the market provide both types of fiber and pre- and probiotics.

Bio:  Haley Duclos, BS, NDTR is a Dietetic Technician, Registered, and Nutrition Advisor for Raley’s O-N-E Market in El Dorado Hills.  She is a graduate from the University of Nevada, Reno in Nutrition and Dietetics, with a minor in public health. Haley has been with Raley’s for over five years and holds extensive product knowledge and grocery retail background.

At the meeting, Haley provided handouts on a Gut Friendly recipe and a Gut Health Shopping list.   If you weren't at the meeting, she can probably provide you with these at the El Dorado Hills Raley's ONE Market.  She provides free guided store tours, workshops/classes, and one-on-one nutrition coaching for Something Extra members in the Eldorado Hills area.

Announcements:

Bill Ettlich: gave credit to the volunteers from the club that helped with the Salvation Army bell ringing at the CP Bel Air store: Steve Long, Marlyn Pino-Jones, Don Fuller, Mike Dugan Dave Sargent and Ulla Peterson.

Bill said we could erase the date of 12/18 for volunteering at the EDC Food Bank from our calendars.  It turned out that they had too many volunteers willing to help.

Bill also announced the event near the Community Observatory on December 11th at 5:30pm (for details, click this link) to celebrate the launching of the James Webb (no relation to our late member) Space Telescope.

Dave Sargent updated us on the Dec. 9th Christmas Party (5:30 pm Cocktail Hour and 6:30 pm dinner) at the Country Club. There are now 62 confirmed attendees.  He listed 3 of the 7 live auction items: 1) A gift card bin worth around $800; 2) An 8-person Danish Lunch at Ulla's home; and 3) A week stay at a time-share donated by Marlyn Pino-Jones.   He asked committee members to stay after for the final meeting before the event.
