Child Advocates of El Dorado (CASA) provides support, empowerment, and a voice for the abused, neglected, and at-risk youth in our community. Amy Pooley is the Executive Director and will speak to us about the current status and needs of CASA. When children are abused or severely neglected, they must rely on adults to help them obtain justice and services. Who deserves an advocate more than an abused or neglected child?
The heart of our program is the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), a specially trained and supervised community volunteer, appointed by a Juvenile Court judge. CASA advocates make a difference in the lives of abused and neglected children by researching and monitoring cases involving children in foster care. CASA volunteers provide a balancing and supportive relationship with a foster child. Sometimes a CASA volunteer may take the role of a family coach who strives to heal family issues to avoid having children taken from their homes. There is currently a great need for more CASA volunteers: there are currently about 8 kids waiting on the Western Slope and 10 in South Lake Tahoe waiting for their CASA.
Becoming a CASA volunteer is a substantial commitment. There is background checking required including FBI screening and Megan's Law screening. Training for the role takes 30 hours, including 15 hours for an on-line course and 15 either in-person or on Zoom. A CASA volunteer typically is associated with a child over an 18-24 month time period. Please consider either donating money or your time to support CASA. For more information go to their website.
