Now retired, Smith serves as a board member of the Code 9 Project, an organization dedicated to supporting the mental health of first responders and veterans, with a focus on identifying and treating PTSD and preventing suicide.
At our March 19 meeting, we welcomed talented students and musicians from Ponderosa High School who competed in the Rotary Club of Cameron Park’s Annual Youth Instrumental Music Contest. As usual, it was a crowd favorite.
Students performed musical selections lasting between three and eight minutes. The contestants finished as follows:
Lucas -- First Place – $250
Michael -- Second Place – $150
Addy -- Third Place – $100
Pictured from left are: Michael, AG Don Fuller, Lucas, Prez Adam, and Addy.
Lucas, the winner of our club competition will advance to the Area 6 Music Contest. The Area winner will then move on to compete at the District 5190 contest, which will be held during the District Conference on May 2, 2026, in Reno, Nevada, where the first-place winner receives $1,000.
This program reflects Rotary’s commitment to encouraging young people and supporting the arts in our community.
It was a joy to witness and listen to the musical talents of these local students.
Ponderosa Little League asked for our help in painting two small storage sheds at Rasmussen Park. The Little League had already repaired the sheds, and we provided the paint, brushes, rollers and labor to complete it.
On Sunday, March 22, six members and a spouse painted and took pictures. The crew of painters was from left: Joe Ryan, Melody and Shayan Khales, Gary Clarke, Kathy Thompson, and PE Dan Gott.Tom Elken did a little painting and took pictures.
Many hands made light work, and we were finished in about two hours. It was a great opportunity to roll up our sleeves and support youth sports in our community.
To the right is a Rotarians at Work (Dan and Joe) picture of the other shed.
And finally is a picture of a shed Before the painting.

- The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self restraint to keep from meddling with them while they do it.
