Next Meeting, Dec-17-2020:  Brian Veerkamp, Outgoing BOS Chair and Newly Elected EID Director
Brian K. Veerkamp is the outgoing chair of the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors and El Dorado County Water Agency, and a newly elected director for the EID (El Dorado Irrigation District).  He is a 5th generation resident of El Dorado County.  He stands strong on his family’s pioneer values to "do the right thing."  We are excited to have him speak to us about what is happening in El Dorado County, and current issues.

Serving 30 years in Public Emergency Services until “retiring” in 2011, his career began with a position as a Volunteer/Paid Call Firefighter and culminated in his last position as Fire Chief of the El Dorado Hills Fire Department.  He is a Charter Adjunct Professor with a Lifetime Teaching Credential for Los Rios Community College.

A former Rotarian, Brian’s commitment to “Service Above Self” is evident in the many ways he gives back to the community.  Brian has served on numerous boards and organizations over the years.  Some of these include the elected board of the Camino Union School District, El Dorado County Emergency Services Authority JPA, Emergency Medical Services Training Program Director for El Dorado County Fire Chief’s Association, Marshall Foundation for Community Health Board, Marshall Medical Board, El Dorado Community Foundation Board and the Kiwanis Club of Placerville.  He also maintains affiliations with Boys and Girls Club, and the NRA.

Brian resides in Placerville with Lori, his wife of 40 years. They have two daughters, two sons-in-law, two granddaughters, one grandson and many other family members that call El Dorado County home.
Last Meeting, Dec-03:  Brad Howard, Former RI Board Member

Our speaker Brad Howard is a Past District Governor of District 5170 (California’s Silicon Valley), and a past member of the Board of Directors of Rotary International’s for the 2015-17 Rotary years.  He is currently serving as aide to Jennifer Jones, the 2022-2023 Rotary International President.  Brad just completed serving a three-year term as Chairman of Rotary’s Communication Committee, and was a member of the 2020 Rotary Convention committee, which planned the 2020 Virtual Convention.

Brad is hoping that Rotary membership is at the low tide point, and it is about to start increasing in our established areas. Some corporations used to pay for certain employees to attend Rotary meetings and made contributions to the Rotary Foundation.  Now, it is more typical for corporations to engage in serving the community directly.  Thus, for-profit corporations have become part of Rotary's competition.

Brad spoke to us about the challenges and opportunities for Rotary Clubs in this pandemic year.  Most clubs, like ours, are meeting only virtually since the COVID-19 pandemic kicked into gear.  Brad noted that, depending on the club, attendance is often better with virtual meetings than before.  Since there is not a meal, meetings are often shorter (60 vs. 90 minutes) and it is possible to get better speakers.

Brad said that Rotary is preparing a proposal for how clubs can host hybrid meetings, in which some attend face-to-face and some attend via Zoom.  He said that an upcoming Melbourne Conference will be conducted this way, and he hopes it will be a big success.  A guest, Hiranand Thani,  Past-President of the Barbados Rotary Club, said that their club is holding hybrid meetings and that it is working beautifully.

Brad told us that Rotary is a membership organization that does service projects.  Clubs are more successful that focus on the members.  Clubs need to better understand their members and help them succeed in Rotary and in the rest of their lives.  If we do that, our clubs will naturally grow.  We need our members to love our clubs.  Building stronger clubs will attract more members.

The audience consisted of our club members plus about 30 guests.  All were very appreciative of Brad's enthusiastic message.  To review Brad's talk, the introduction and his  presentation start at the 5:18 point at this FaceBook link - drag the progress marker dot to that time.

Announcements:

Roger Hassler:  Two items.  1) Since we are not having a Christmas Party, and many of us invited friends to our table in the past for that, why not ask those friends for a donation of $110 per couple.  The check should be made out to Cameron Park Rotary and write Christmas party on the "for/reason" line. 2)  As your Foundation Chair, if you're looking for a way to decrease your 2020 taxes before the end of the year, consider a donation to the Rotary Foundation, either to Annual Giving or to Polio Plus.

President Mike Dugan:
  • EDCOE Coat donations: 18 members have donated a total of $1000 for a total of 40 coats for needy students.  The donation door is still open.  Contact Mike or Dick Franks to make your donation
  • 3rd Grader Dictionary Project:  Mike received 45 heart-warming notes, letters and pictures.  He will scan some of the pictures and distribute.
  • Our club donated $1000 to the Pollock Pines/Camino bike path project.  Our donation helped them raise $11,000 for that project.  We will also be donating bicycles to the same club to help kids in that community enjoy the new path.
  • We also contributed $1,000 towards a total of $13,000 raised by the Soroptomist's Club to fight human trafficking.
  • We had attendees today from 8 different states and 2 foreign countries to listen to Brad Howard.
Joe Ryan
  • Bicycle Project:  There will be a distribution of 270 bicycles at the Prison on December 10th.  Once they distribute those, then we can deliver some more.  We still need to go to the dump and pick up bicycles and take them to Art Cort's storage building to make space at the dump.
  • Loaded a pallet of ~250 Levi's pants onto Steve Long's pickup truck and took them to Green Valley Church to be distributed to local homeless people.

Laurie Edwards:  If you would like to volunteer to help with the 2021 Virtual Academic Decathalon for high school students, taking place on 1/27/21, let Laurie know.  There will be an email from Mike about this.

Bill Ettlich:  Thanks to 6 members that volunteered as bell-ringers for the Salvation Army at Bel Air market in Cameron Park last weekend!   Also, we are looking for volunteers at the EC Food Bank at 1-3:00pm Dec. 17 to package food and get it into the cars of people needing food this holiday season.  We need 2 more volunteers.
Guests and Visitors:

Sara Edwards, Laurie's mother

and about 30 guests from 8 states and 2 other countries -- too many to list.
